General Information for Transfer Students
All students who have previously qualified for and/or have received gifted and talented program services prior to coming to RFISD may submit a referral form immediately upon enrollment.

A student who enrolls at RFISD with current standardized testing records that are an exact match to the district’s criteria for qualification for any program services will be admitted immediately, pending a review of records by the District GT Coordinator and the Campus GT Placement Committee. Parents will be notified of status via US mail, and parent permission is required in order to initiate services.

If the student’s transferred records do not meet the criteria and/or are not an exact match to RFISD's qualifications, then further assessment will be needed. Whether or not the student demonostrates a need for gifted services will be made based upon the transferred records, observation reports of classroom teachers who instruct the student, and assessment instruments currently utilized to assess students referred for gifted services.

A student who has been identified as gifted and talented at his/her previous school but is unable to obtain appropriate test scores from his/her records will be subject to reassessment. The data that comes with the new student must not be more than two years old and must appropriately match RFISD’s criteria for the specific services for which the student is referred. As different districts have different program services, the selection criteria will vary. Our staff makes every attempt to use information from prior schools rather than to reassess a new student. However, more often than not, the data is not compatible or is outdated; thus, new testing is required to match the services of our program.

If the parents or guardians of a transfer student feel that their child may not meet the district’s criteria, and/or the child may have difficulty experiencing success in the district’s program, they may request that the child not participate in the program even though the student may clearly qualify. Parents must sign a form denying services for their child.

Please contact our office directly for information regarding referral paperwork.
