| Resize an Image |
|
Sometimes you load your image and click "Preview" and then discover your image is too large or too small. No problem. You can change it here in netStartClass. In the options by the image, click on "Resize This Image".
Note: I had a much larger picture here. It made the text on the rest of the page go out too far to the right and made scrolling necessary. This picture is now still too big, but not a big problem. You can see that the menu on the left is not completely below the banner graphic. This picture is only a problem on lower resolution monitors. The more a picture pushes the menu out from below the banner graphic, the more the number of monitors that will be unable to display the text (and sometimes the picture too) without scrolling sideways. |

The Controls |
100% is the original size. 200% is twice as wide, twice as tall. That is 4 times as big on the whole picture. 50% is half as wide, half as tall. That is 1/4 the size of the original photo. Once you have chosen, click on the "Preview" button in that area. If you like it, "Save" it. If not, re-size it again.
Only JPG images can be re-sized, not GIF. |

Same Photo, 50% |
Originally I had a 640x480 image at the top, and resized it 50%. The picture at the top of the page has since been reduced, so this is no longer 50% of the top picture. I did choose 50% on the resize menu to reduce it to its current size, 320x240 pixels.
320x240 leaves a nice area for the text to the side of the graphic. |

Personally |
|
I prefer to prepare my pictures ahead of time in FireWorks. When I load them, they are already 320x240 which still looks at least "ok" with the text that will fit to the side of the picture. When I have crowd shots and want them "larger" so I can see them better, I take the larger picture and "zoom in" (actually I crop the photo) to a smaller part of the big picture which retains the "larger" look in a smaller picture. |

Update - new "secret" |
|
I now have the "resizer" power tool for Windows XP installed on my computer. For a group of pictures, I just create a copy of all the pictures in a new folder. Then, in the new folder, I select all (the images). I right-click on one image. I click on Advanced. I type in 320 (by) 240 (for smaller pictures) or sometimes 480 (by) 360 (largest I use on any page). I click the box that makes it change the original (not create a copy - because I don't want to have to manually change all the file names to something shorter). All of the images resize at once, and they are then ready for uploading with no need for resizing in netStart. :) |

Big Shots |
|
Remember that larger pictures take more time to appear on screen, especially on dialup access which is a concern for some parents. |

Update - a better explanation of what happens |
I have created a new description of what happens when resizing photos in netStart. I did not want to increase this page's length, so just click here to view the explanation. |
