MINUTES from March 13, 2003, were reviewed and accepted as printed.
Update on Implementation of Performance Tasks:
Karen Bessette and David Gibbs reported that all grade levels are in the process of completing their final performance task for the year.
Bruce Cannon is reported on the different disciplines at the secondary level. All performance tasks are to be completed before the end of the year.
The
updated Graduate Survey was distributed to the SPC members. Revisions were discussed including the
distribution of the survey as a follow-up survey through Life Track.
Define integration options for integrated performance
tasks to be written in 2003-2004:
Develop and implement an integrated Performance Task of at least two subject areas. This task should be written and piloted before the end of next year. (It may integrate two subjects or more, but it is suggested that we limit it to two disciplines for this writing.) The plan for this goal needs to be presented to staff before they leave for the summer to assist in preplanning and in attending conferences that might prepare them for such an expectation.
Each task must have a critical component of each of the disciplines involved. i.e.: A teacher should not expect to simply add a graph to a task and think they have integrated MATH into that task. (Teachers may look at each of the existing tasks to see where they might integrate disciplines.)
The task must have the attributes of our curriculum: Access, Process, Communicate and be an integral part of the TEKS.
All students will continue to complete the two performance tasks presently being administered. In addition, integrated performance tasks will be introduced next year. This integrated performance task must include the critical components of each discipline it intends to integrate. Look at English, Language Arts for integrated tasks that can work in all disciplines.
Elementary and Middle School need to have ALL students complete an integrated task in addition to the two performance tasks that are now completed. ONE of the two tasks already being implemented could be written as an integrated task for next year’s integrated performance task. In high school, we understand that not ALL students may be able to complete the integrated task due to schedule differences and course offering conflicts. As many students as possible are to complete the integrated task at the high school level.
Finalize plans for district staff development days for
2003-2003
At the August in-service (Day 1): Time will be spent with the campus
improvement plan.
For
the August in-service (Day 2): Spend
time addressing IINTEGRATED PERFORMANCE TASKS.
*Vertical Team on DAY 1 (Oct. 30TH) - MORNING: work on the integrated performance task
discussions in grade level / discipline teams.
-
Day 1 (Oct. 30th) - AFTERNOON: share the tasks and look at
k-12 vertical alignment. Discuss changes
and the integrity of the team’s performance tasks with the team’s input. Then, have some integration task discussions
in vertical teams.
*DAY
2 (Oct.31st): MORNING:
Look at TAKS data and strategies issues
across grade levels for working in subject disciplines or grade levels.
*DAY 2 (Oct. 31st): AFTERNOON: Provide “break-out”
sessions in smaller group settings.
Develop a plan to communicate w/ teachers about the focus
of curriculum development of integrated performance tasks for 2003-2004
There will be INTEGRATED PERFORMANCE TASKS developed and
implemented for 2003-2004. Information
will be reported on what integrated means. Send one announcement by
e-mail and one announcement face to face in team meetings to the staff
members. SPC Members on each team will
provide the face-to-face meetings with the appropriate staff teams.
Develop a Plan to mentor new teachers to ensure curriculum and performance tasks are implemented:
All new teachers get an overview of our curriculum process presently, but we need to look at a formalization of the curriculum understanding for new teachers in the SPC August meeting. A secondary teacher suggested that a new teacher be given two mentors; one in the grade level or subject/discipline below, and one in the grade level or subject/discipline above their course.
We will look at these issues in the August 7, 2003, SPC meeting.
