SPC Meeting

November 19, 2002

Room 6 – Randolph Elementary  School

Summary

Update on PURPOSE Statement:

Campus principals reported on their meetings with teams about our purpose statement.  The faculty discussions resulted in the opinion that the purpose statement continues to meet the needs of our community.

The SPC agreed to make no changes in the Purpose Statement at this time based on discussion of the reports from all members on all campuses.

Update on Graduate Survey

A copy of the proposed survey was handed out to SPC members.  The subcommittee suggests a survey be created which will be more consistent with our Purpose Statement.  They will report to us on progress on this survey at our next meeting in February.

Sharing of Performance Tasks:

A discussion on the sharing of Performance Tasks with SPC was held.  The SPC encourages Performance Tasks to be instructed throughout the year.  Therefore, it is suggested that Performance Tasks be shared at faculty meetings or team meetings.  The information on the Performance Tasks shared should be:  Describe the task and its purpose; what changes are needed; if integrated, did it work; was the task effective or what were the results…..  This should be done in 10 minute sharings.

Update on Technology to COLLECT Curriculum Revisions in SPRING

A meeting with the vertical team facilitators discussed how to collect the curriculum revisions.  These facilitators desire training on the electronic method of collecting this data.  This training would not likely occur until after February.  The process should be simple.  If it turned out NOT to be simple, we would delay collecting data electronically until we could arrange for a simpler format.

Recommendations to Calendar Committee on Staff Development to continue CURRICULUM Project (Maggie Napper)

SPC needs to make a recommendation to the Calendar Committee on the number of days of training and at what time of the year to present the training. The first semester is shorter in major part due to the concern to end the first semester before Christmas.  Shortening of the semester makes it difficult to cover course work in one-semester courses.  The first semester is as much as 16 days shorter under the present calendar (82 days vs. 98 days).  Discussion was held about beginning school earlier.  This would require a public hearing.  After it is approved that way, it goes to T.E.A.  Parents have reported that they prefer to begin school closer to the beginning of September.

SPC agreed to send the following suggestions to the Calendar Committee:

POINTS of CONSIDERATION for the Calendar Committee:

*It is recommended that we have two days of staff development at the beginning of the school year and two days during the Thanksgiving week as we have done this year.  (It is also suggested that the Calendar Committee consider extending the first semester past Winter Break to allow more equitable days in both semesters.)

*It is also recommended that a public hearing be held to have school begin earlier, the beginning of August, in order to have more time to adequately prepare students for advance placement and end of semester exams before the Winter Break.

Kay Magness gave a SPC curriculum update to DWIC in November.
