Minutes of Strategic Planning Committee

August 6, 2002

The Strategic Planning Committee met August 6, 2002, in the Elementary School Conference Room with the following members present:  Rita Polen, Gail Combs, David Gibbs, Kirby Olson, Richard Bonnell, Ron Bolin, Dick Wilson, Beth Howard, Karen Bessette, Dabs Hollimon, Ricki Brady, Edie Gross, Kay Magness, Sally Lewis, and Bruce Cannon.  Dick Wilson was the facilitator, and Kay Magness and Sally Lewis were recorders.

The committee reviewed the Results of an Aligned Curriculum as compiled by the Action Subcommittee July 29, 2002, and approved the distribution of the results packets through the principals at the beginning of the school year.

The committee also reviewed the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Goals and Performance Indicators (No Child Left Behind legislation) and discussed the incorporation of these goals in the Results of an Aligned Curriculum as well as campus and district plans.

The committee reviewed and noted needed refinements in the Five-Year Curriculum Plan for 2002-2007.  The plan will be shared with faculties during the August-September time period, and a subcommittee will meet after the mid-year DEC visit to consider the impact of No Child Left Behind provisions on the plan.

The Graduate Survey Subcommittee is continuing their work and will report midyear.

The SPC considered the process for turning in curriculum revisions and examined the possibility of using email attachments.  A subcommittee will work on a plan for posting the curriculum.

The SPC also established a process for sharing performance tasks with the committee and agreed to have teachers on each campus share informally according to SPC criteria° at least one performance task at faculty and/or departmental meetings monthly, rotating levels and disciplines, single and integrated.  Campus administrators will see that regular reports of tasks sharing are made to SPC.

o        Briefly discuss the task and its purpose.  What changes are still needed?  If integrated, how did it work?  How do you know the task was effective, i.e., what were your results?  Sharing should be accomplished in 10 minutes.

SPC member Kay Magness will give the SPC curriculum update to the Districtwide Improvement Committee (DWIC) in November.

The committee scheduled the following meeting dates for 2002-2003: November 19, February 25, and May 13.
