Critique of October 30-31 Staff Development

Members discussed the staff development that was held October 30 and 31st.  Feedback indicated that the Thursday work time was appreciated by all teachers.  Feedback on Friday’s morning sessions was positive as well.  Members reported that the teachers were distracted on Friday afternoon due to the Blue Angels and other air traffic in the area, but the high school teachers did make some social connections with each other teachers.

Review of Strategic Five Year Plan for Curriculum

Goal 2 action steps were not all completed - the vertical alignment of research process skills for grades K-12.  This was initiated and worked on in the November professional development sessions. Martha Rouse, Deb Pannabecker and Roger Ruder volunteered to be on the committee.  Rita will contact the team leaders to get three middle school and three elementary teachers.  Roger Ruder was volunteered to chair the committee.

Goal 2 action steps regarding “continue to develop criteria to evaluate the curriculum to assure success on TAKS and provide challenging learning for all students, and measure the effectiveness of performance tasks and the curriculum as a whole”.    It was decided to take out the “and” and make it two bullets.  We’ve done item analysis which supports the first part.  It was recommended that a subcommittee of SPC review the five-year curriculum plan.  Kay Magness will be invited to join the committee.   Dabs Hollimon, Beth Howard, Rita Polen, Ricki Brady, Fritz Norman and Allana Hemenway volunteered to be on the committee.  This committee needs to meet before the February meeting.  It was recommended by Rita that the committee meet in January.

Recommendations for Staff Development Needs for 2004-2005

It was recommended that a team building activity be implemented into the staff development activities in 2004-2005 to increase teacher interaction.  It is recommended to the calendar committee that the two days occur the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving and one day on Friday, November 12.  This would hopefully assist A.D.A.  The SPC would recommend that Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Thanksgiving are staff and student holidays.

Set Subcommittee Meetings for Graduate Survey and Electronic Curriculum Submission

Rita will get dates set for these.

Integrated Performance Tasks to Share with SPC

SPC will ask for volunteers to present.  One ten minute presentation from each school will be requested.  Student work should be highlighted – bring examples of student work to share.  Students are welcome to present with the teachers.  Principals will be asked to solicit volunteers.

Next Meeting: Tuesday, February 3, 2003 at 4:00 p.m. in Room 21.

Beth Howard volunteered to facilitate the meeting.

Fritz Norman volunteered to take minutes on the computer.

Dabs Hollimon volunteered to take minutes by hand.
