GUIDELINES FOR CLASSROOM COPYING OF ELECTRONIC MATERIAL
If you have questions regarding the use of media obtained from the internet by you or your students, please review the copyright crash course at: copyright.lib.utexas.edu .

THINGS HAVE CHANGED.
Because of changes in the law, teachers can now do less legally. Every teacher should read about The TEACH Act which restricts fair use at times, such as when putting things on the web. copyright.lib.utexas.edu/teacheract.htm

There are somethings that are granted to higher ed that some say apply to k-12. Others look at the same things and say only higher ed is covered.

The UT system library copyright site is produced by the University of Texas and can easily answer most of your questions. It is very easy to use and you are given the option of looking at laws that pertain to images, text, etc. without having to “dig” through pages of material that is not relevant to your question.

Keeping it simple: create it or credit it.

And the basic guideline: if you cost someone money by (copying tests that they sell, posting scans of posters that they sell, etc.) you are not covered by Fair Use or the TEACH Act.

You are responsible should there be a question about copyright on something you use (in class or posting it, etc.) You are to advise students about correct use. They are responsible for what they use after you tell them.
